Shame poem

[The first line is from “Problems with Hurricanes” by Victor Hernández Cruz.]

This would not carry shame
if I thought anyone should listen to me.
This would not carry shame
if I had an original way of getting them to.
This would not carry shame
if I chose not to hear their voices.
They say,
You are a fraud.
They say,
Let others do the telling.
They say,
You aren’t what you want to be.
They say,
You’ll never be as good as them.
They say,
You’ll never be enough.
